You Know That You Are In Indonesia When ...

  • Chickens really do cross the road
  • You can buy dinner for a family of 4 for $5
  • A flat bicycle tire is replaced with a wheelbarrow tire
  • Garbage men retrieve garbage with their bare hands and use baskets, ropes and tarps to throw heaps of trash into a dump truck
  • You need a gate around your yard to keep out dogs that run freely
  • You have a vendor come to your gate selling dog meat
  • Papaya and banana trees are everywhere
  • At the market a 5 kilo papaya (that’s 11 pounds of fruit) can be bought and only costs $3
  • School begins at 6:30 in the morning
  • Some church services begin at 5:30 am
  • Fathers bring their children to school on a motorbike, but the child is on a bicycle … Yes, the father rides his motorbike with one hand and hangs onto his child’s bike with the other hand. Free ride … and fast too!

And my personal favourite:

  • A grown man is seen walking down the road sporting a white jogging suit (yes, the 80’s style) with Tweety Bird pictured on the back!
